The 2021 U.S. Open
... starts Monday ! ...Djokovic goes for the calendar slam, with Federer, Nadal, and Thiem all missing. Some seed numbers ;

4 - Zverev - just won the Olympic gold medal, and followed up with the Cincinnati tournament.
6 - Berrettini - ten Italians in the mens draw, Berrettini is the best of them.
8 - Ruud - young Norwegian has just won three lower ranked tourneys.
22 - Opelka - the highest ranked American now, he is a massive six feet eleven.

...and the women ;

1 - Barty - won Wimbledon, and tourneys on two other surfaces, Barty has pulled away from the field this year.
2 - Sabalenka - like a powerful cannon that sometimes misfires. She needs it to be her day
11 - Bencic - she won the gold in Tokyo, and is best on hard surfaces.
U - Giorgi - the unseeded Italian Giorgi just won the Montreal tournament.

No
She young and in NY with all the emotions that 911 would bring.
If she was in London on 7/7 she would probably say a similar thing.Fernandez had a right to put her point of view across. Better for her to be a bit teary than a hard crusty dyke type acting like a neanderthal bricklayer.
It's also perfectly allright for anyone to have feelings.
People like Vexed are just short of everything a human should be think they are being clever for every comment.

That Adil Ray is one funny fucker.

His tweet -

“If you play in a tennis final you’re British if you’re a builder/delivery man/waitress etc you’re Romanian.”

Someone needs to tell him Toronto isn’t in Romania.

.. it's just not true that the Williams sisters have dominated in recent years.

they have won only 3 of the last 24 Grand Slams

Re: The 2021 U.S. Open
Like I've said previously the womens game (apart from the Williams') has been very weak for years, so it's not completely surprising that two unseeded playes get to the final. But it is surprising for a qualifier to end up winning the thing.

The highest ranked player that Raducanu beat was the 11th seed, whereas Fernandez had beaten the 2nd, 3rd and 5th seeds. So for Emma to have beaten her in straight sets suggests she's the real deal and not just a one-off as so many have been in recent years.

Fifth Column 12:26 Sun Sep 12, I also could see the words on New Yorkers and 9/11 was maybe premeditated, but it was quite nicely done and well thought out. I think she was sincere even if it was planned. I guess she does have a good old USA type media team consulting her, they’re like that over there and I wouldn’t read too much into it as a comment on her. She’s 19, worth a lot of money now and a bunch of cunts are trying to control. Hope she does well, she does seem a nice person, like Emma.

Re: The 2021 U.S. Open
Fernandez seemed to have a group of about 50 with her and Amazon loved showing them every 2 mins.

Seemed a bit fake. Telling her to smile all the time and sitting with sponsored hats.

One shot of Emma’s camp at the end and that was it.

My sister lives in Alberta in Canada

She has had nothing but grief from her customers in the place she works, government building, she is an immigration officer

Gone in today with an England shirt on !!!

She said that they had lined up all these commercial deals for Fernandez, not sure you noticed they were wearing baseball caps sponsored by a Canadian airline.

The constant fist pumping by Fernandez was pissing me off plus that shadow tennis she does

Makes the win so much more sweeter

Re: The 2021 U.S. Open
she's a great player and can win many more big tournaments.
Its true she won it without facing any top ten players.
The same happened to Marion Bartoli when she won Wimbledon. Never dropped a set either.

Teenage tennis sensation Emma Raducanu received praise from Prime Minister Boris Johnson and from the Royal Family with the Queen commenting “it is a remarkable achievement at such a young age, and is testament to your hard work and dedication.”.
And Prince Andrew enquired as to if she was free next Saturday and if she likes pizza

Re: The 2021 U.S. Open
It's a phenomenal achievement for a young lady of that age, and she obviously has the mental toughness to go with the talent to win many more.

However, to be the greatest sporting achievement of all time by a Brit, it would had to have included beating an all time great along the way. If she beat a Steffi Graf, or a Williams, then fair enough, but I bet hardly any of you remember the names of anyone she beat along the way.

Take nothing away, as I say an amazing achievement, but let's be honest before claiming it's the best sporting achievement ever.
